Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority welcomed new Redlands Unified School District educators at its annual teachers reception.

Held Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Contemporary Club, dozens of ADK members offered handshakes and hellos to more than 60 new teachers in attendance along with principals from their respective schools.

The annual reception introduces new teachers to one another in a casual setting and adds to RUSD school libraries through a donation of a new books to each school.

“We love this because we get to see the faces of the new teachers (and) they get to know our faces because we’re spread out at all the different schools,” said Jeanie Nowak, chairwoman of the event. “I think this is important because it brings new teachers in right away and gives them camaraderie and lets them know that’s not just available at their own schools but throughout the entire district.”

Alpha Delta Kappa is an internationally recognized honorary organization of women educators “dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.” The Redlands chapter is in the middle of its 70th anniversary.

ADK purchased three titles suitable for age groups served at each school within RUSD. This year’s selections, which were purchased at the Frugal Frigate in downtown Redlands, were “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio (elementary), “The Only Road” by Alexandria Diaz (middle school), and “The Sun is Also a Star” by Nicola Yoon (high school).

Books selected focused on the idea of acceptance and perseverance, said Mara Comadena and Tracy Topoleski, ADK members who selected this year’s titles.

Nowak said this year’s group is one of the biggest ADK has honored. The celebration moved from the Assembly Room of the A.K. Smiley Public Library to the Contemporary Club.

Women educators are invited to join ADK for showing “excellence” in their career after several years in the field.
