Pair arrested, suspected of stealing mail from Riverside homes – Redlands Daily Facts

RIVERSIDE — Two convicted felons were arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing mail from multiple Riverside residences before officers stopped them.

Angela Mercado, 25, and Ramon Juan Pedroza, 30, were taken into custody about 3:30 a.m. She was arrested on suspicion of mail theft and parole violations, while Pedroza was booked on suspicion of theft, driving on a suspended license and probation violations, according to Riverside police.

Both suspects were being held at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside – – Mercado without bail and Pedroza in lieu of $75,000 bail.

According to police, a concerned citizen called 911 shortly before 3 a.m. to report that a man and woman were slowly cruising the area of Tiger Tail Drive and Whitegate Avenue on the south side of the city, and the woman was periodically getting out of the vehicle to try the handles on parked cars, as well as jiggling the doors on houses.

Patrol officers went to the location but did not immediately find the suspects. However, while passing the intersection of Cactus and Dauchy avenues, officers spotted the car that had been described by the caller, and as they began tailing it, “the occupants started throwing mail out of the windows,” according to a police statement.

Officers pulled the driver — Pedroza — over moments later and seized numerous pieces of mail taken from homes, investigators alleged.

The suspects were taken into custody without incident.

According to court records, Pedroza has prior convictions for identity theft and receiving stolen property. Mercado has several priors out of a neighboring jurisdiction, but they weren’t specified.
