Authorities Friday identified a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the head in an unincorporated area of Covina and sought help in making an arrest.

The shooting occurred at 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the 4500 block of Heathdale Avenue. Karla Villa of Baldwin Park died at a hospital on Sunday, according to the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s department.

The teen was with a group of people when she was shot. Sheriff’s Sgt. Nicole Davis told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that witnesses saw three or four men leaving the area in a speeding dark-colored SUV last seen headed south on Heathdale Avenue, then east toward Hollenbeck Avenue.

A possible motive has not been released.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives urged anyone with information about the killing to call them at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS.
