An officer from the California Highway Patrol’s Ventura office was arrested early Tuesday after being involved in an shooting while off duty, Ventura police said Wednesday.
The shooting was reported at 12:43 a.m. in the 2500 block of Bayshore Avenue.
Police arrived to find a 49-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his back, police said. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, according to authorities.
The suspect, later identified as Trevor Dalton, 45, of Ventura, remained at the scene as officers launched an investigation into the incident, police said. Officers learned Dalton was an off-duty CHP officer who worked for the agency’s Ventura office, authorities said.
Through an investigation, police learned that Dalton and the victim got involved in an altercation in the driveway of the residence, according to authorities. During the altercation, Dalton shot a firearm twice at the victim, with one of the shots hitting him, police said. Officers said they later recovered the firearm.
Dalton was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He was taken into custody and held in county jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, according to authorities.
